Poland Pull Away Late 23 July 2008
A strong push late in the third quarter propelled Poland past the Ukraine 73-64 in the U18 European Championship for Women.

The result sees Poland improve to 2-2 in Group E of the Qualifying Round while their opponents dropped to 1-3.

Madga Kaczmarska and Klaudia Sosnowska combined for 35 points and were the main instigators as Poland scored 16 of the last 19 points in the pivotal third quarter to take a 57-44 lead.

The Ukrainians came back within three, 59-56, on Olesya Maznichenko's basket with 5:16 left to play, but that would be as close as they would get.

The Poles jumped out to a quick 12-3 as Ukraine couldn't get going offensively with tournament leading scorer Ol'Ha Maznichenko failing to score in the game's first quarter and a half.

Kaczmarska had 10 first-half points to help Poland take a 19-15 first quarter lead.

The Ukraine recovered from their slow start as Yuliya Berezynets took over the scoring duties with 12 points before the break. She got her team within one, 22-21, with 5:55 left in the first half and
the teams then traded baskets and were tied at 31 all as they headed to the locker rooms.

Fedora Kochergina's girls were able to stay close for the better part of the third quarter as Kateryna Dorogobuzova got herself going offensively and Maznichenko got a few easy buckets. They were within three, 44-41, when the former converted a three-point play.

But Poland then went on their impressive run and, even though the Ukraine scored eight of the first 10 points of the final frame to come within three, they then ran out of offensive firepower.

Dorgobuzova and Berezynets each had 14 points and Maznichenko chipped in with 13.
