Russia A Bear For Spain 18 July 2008

Russia used a strong second quarter to record an 82-66 win against Spain at the U18 European Championship for Women.

This was a much-anticipated match-up between teams that finished second (Spain) and third (Russia) at last year's tournament, but it was pretty much one-way traffic after the opening frame.

Russia  trailed 8-3 early on but after taking their first lead, 15-14, on Tatiana Petrushina's free-throws, they never really under any threat the rest of the way.

Behind the fine play of Alexandra Tarasova and Anastasia Logunova, Olga Shuneykina's side built a double-digit lead in the second quarter and kept Spain at bay the rest of the way.

The eventual losers shot well enough from two point range (47.2 per cent) but were done in by their lack of accuracy from beyond the arc (six for 26).

Russia outplayed last year's runners-up in most statistical category to record a impressive win.

Tarasova had a solid all-around game with game-highs of 16 points, nine rebounds as well as two assists and two steals. With 14 points, Logunova was one of four other players in double figures

Leonor Rodriguez was the only player to score in double figures for Spain, notching 15.
