| Turkey thrashed Italy 78-45 to register their first win at the U18 European Championship for Women.
Ayhan Avci Esref's side used an 8-0 run to turn a 9-6 deficit into a 14-9 lead with just over three minutes left in the first quarter and never rescinded the lead.
Italy fought back to trail by the smallest of margins, 19-18, at the end of the first period before getting getting outscored 20-10 in the second quarter.
The Azzuris trailed 34-25 at the break and things went from bad to worse for them as play resumed in the second half.
The Turks outscored their opponents 22-7 over the first seven minutes of the third period to take a commanding 55-34 advantage and kept the gap around the 30-point mark for much of the fourth quarter.
Turkish guard Damla Gezgin led all scorers with 22 and team-mate Tugce Canitez notched a double double with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Ozge Yavas chipped with 10 points six rebounds and six assists.
Alessandra Tava had 13 points and 11 rebounds for Italy. | | |
